Dallas Cowboys Quarterback: Could the Los Angeles Chargers trade quarterback Tyrod Taylor before Tuesday’s deadline?

Tyrod Taylor may be the next Dallas Cowboy Quarterback!

The NFL Trade Deadline is Tuesday afternoon, and while some quarterbacks like Matt Ryan, Sam Darnold and Dwayne Haskins have been rumored in possible deals, it’s very likely that none of them are traded – at least until the offseason. However, one QB who is reportedly very available is Los Angeles Chargers backup Tyrod Taylor. SportsLine has released odds on whether Taylor will be on the move.

Taylor has spent time with the Ravens, Bills, Browns and Chargers and is 24-21-1 in his career as a starter with the vast majority of those with Buffalo. During Taylor’s final year there, he led the Bills to the postseason, which hadn’t happened in 18 years.

He won his Chargers debut Sept. 13 in Cincinnati, 16-13, and was supposed to start again Week 2. However, in one of the most unusual injury situations in league history, Taylor couldn’t go in that game vs. Chiefs when he suffered a punctured lung from a pain-killing injection that the team doctor administered for a cracked rib right before that game.

Rookie Justin Herbert took over and has been fabulous – in fact, now the -170 moneyline favorite at William Hill sportsbook to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Herbert isn’t coming out of the lineup again barring injury.

Taylor has been by all accounts a terrific teammate in his career and hasn’t whined about his misfortune. He’s probably a good veteran mentor for Herbert the rest of 2020, but if the Chargers can get a decent draft pick for Taylor they likely would think about it. Taylor, who is healthy now, is not signed after this season and it almost would be doing Taylor a favor to deal him to a team where he can play.

The one team that immediately comes to mind is the Dallas Cowboys with Dak Prescott out for the season and backup Andy Dalton looking terrible in limited action before suffering a concussion in Week 7. He’s in doubt for Week 8 in Philadelphia, meaning the Cowboys may be starting rookie seventh-round pick Ben DiNucci. Dallas still has a very good shot at winning the awful NFC East.

How about Taylor to the Titans to replace Logan Woodside as Ryan Tannehill’s backup? Taylor and Tannehill are actually pretty similar players. Or to Green Bay to replace Tim Boyle as Aaron Rodgers’ backup? To Arizona as Kyler Murray’s No. 2? Back to Buffalo behind Josh Allen? Shoot, the Chargers could be really kind to Taylor and allow him to stay in L.A. by sending him to the Rams to replace John Wolford (who!?) as the backup to Jared Goff.

Perhaps if a starting QB goes down in Week 8, that team will call the Chargers pronto and a deal would be more likely to be completed. However, pretty much all NFL trade odds are going to favor no simply as major deals are rare in the NFL during the season.
